A Note from Larry Gaines

(Joe's Sponsee)

Joe was a visionary mainly because he was relegated to intense solitary studying and meditating on the Big Book with the strong guidance of his sponsor. This was a result of him being the first black man in AA in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1962. He could attend the meetings because of Tradition Three; however, he couldn’t fellowship or drink the coffee.

This fact brings me to this statement: AA has two components, “The Program” and the “Fellowship”. Joe not only saw this but also saw the formula of a treatment program.

A Program is a sequence of ideas that lead to a conclusion. A sequence is paramount to learning and change. That’s how we learn as human beings. Everything is in a sequential order. Example: A baby crawls, stands up slowly, steps, and eventually walks. Same as talking. No one comes out of the womb walking and talking. All this is achieved through gradation and sequence.

Joe developed Recovery Dynamics using units of time, 28 Group Sessions designed to be conducted by trained counselors in residential treatment facilities for those suffering from addiction.

The Bridge of Reason

Written by Larry Gaines

The Bridge of Reason is a thoughtful and academically grounded examination of addiction, recovery, and spiritual transformation, shaped by the teachings of Bill Wilson and the work of Joe McQuany. Drawing from psychology, philosophy, theology, and the Recovery Dynamics model, Larry Gaines explores the deeper structures of addiction, particularly the self, the basic instincts, and the spiritual disconnection that often underlies destructive behavior.

At the same time, this book speaks beyond theory, presenting recovery as a lived process of honesty, surrender, discipline, and change. Gaines offers readers a clearer understanding of recovery as both a spiritual journey and a structured path toward healing by integrating intellectual reflection with practical insight. This book is both informative and deeply purposeful, and is written for counselors, students, treatment professionals, and serious readers.
